New British Sitcom added to WSEC-TV/PBS line-up

OCTOBER 30, 2007, SPRINGFIELD, IL - WSEC-TV, Springfield's PBS station, carries a number of British sitcoms including Red Green Show, My Hero and Last of the Summer Wine . . . the world's longest running sitcom. With the latest addition, May to December, British sitcoms can now be seen Monday through Thursday at 11pm on WSEC-TV/PBS as well as 8-10pm on Saturdays.

May to December is a gentle situation comedy concerning a relationship that crosses the generation gap. It tells the story of Alec Callender, a widowed solicitor in his 50s and Zoe Angell, a teacher some 27 years his junior.

Alec has a typically suburban legal practice, but privately he wishes he were more like his hero, Perry Mason. One day, into his life walks an angel, Zoe Angell, who has come to consult him about a divorce. On the face of it, an aging widower and a 27-year-old physical education teacher should have nothing in common. But a mutual love of old musicals and a whimsical sense of humor spark a romance which surprises not just Alec and Zoe, but also the entire office staff, his two grown-up children and the rest of their families and friends.

Alec and Zoe fall deeply in love, despite seemingly endless pitfalls. Can Perry offer Alec any advice on how to handle an independent career woman of the '90s? If not, there is plenty of conflicting advice from everyone else. May to December is a charming character driven series that also happens to be very funny as well.

May to December can be seen on Saturdays at 9:30pm and Mondays at 11:30pm on WSEC-TV/PBS in Springfield.

WSEC-TV/PBS Program Illinois Stories Receives Emmy Award
First Emmy for Springfield's PBS station

OCTOBER 24, 2007, SPRINGFIELD, IL - At the Mid-America Chapter's annual Emmy Awards, held Saturday night in St. Louis, Illinois Stories received the award in the Interview/Discussion category.

The award is the first Emmy for the WSEC-TV/PBS Springfield, whose first nomination came last year, with Making Conversation.

The program, produced and hosted by Mark McDonald, features the people, places and events in and around Springfield, and throughout central Illinois. The thirty-minute program, which started more than four years ago as a weekly series, today features three new programs each week, with each program focusing on a different region in the Network Knowledge viewing area. To date, almost 400 programs have been produced.

While the award marked a historic point in the history of the station, receiving the award was not a complete surprise to president and CEO, Dr. Jerold Gruebel. Said Gruebel, "I had watched Mark practice his craft as a broadcast journalist for many years, when the idea to do a unique program series with an even more unique style came about. But it would take a special person to do this, a professional who can be among the best in interviewing and a professional who can get it done in one 'take'."

McDonald first worked in television in 1983. He has worked as an anchor and reporter in Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri and Illinois giving him nearly 25 years experience in television and media relations. He started his career at WSEC in 2000, when he began hosting the station's Lawmaker's program. Based on his work on that program, he was asked to host Illinois Stories.

Ken Burns brings The War to WMEC-TV/PBS Macomb

SEPTEMBER 18, 2007, MACOMB, IL - THE WAR, a new seven-part documentary series directed and produced by Ken Burns and Lynn Novick, explores the history and horror of the Second World War from an American perspective by following the fortunes of co-called ordinary men and women who become caught up in one of the greatest cataclysms in human history.

Six years in the making, this epic 14-hour film focuses on the stories of citizens from four geographically distributed American towns - Waterbury, Connecticut; Mobile, Alabama; Sacramento, California; and the tiny farming town of Luverne, Minnesota.

Individuals from each community take the viewer through their own personal and quite often harrowing journeys into war, painting vivid portraits of how the war dramatically altered their lives and those of their neighbors, as well as the country they helped to save for generations to come.

Episodes five and seven will feature interviews with local World War II veterans telling their stories and experiences.

THE WAR will air over two weeks beginning September 23rd - 26th and September 30th - October 2nd at 7pm on WMEC-TV/PBS Macomb. In addition to the national broadcast on PBS, THE WAR will air simultaneously on PBS High Definition Channel with surround sound.

In addition to Keith David's narration, THE WAR features first-person voices read by some of America's greatest actors. Tom Hanks reads the voice of Al McIntosh, the editor of the Rock County Star-Herald in Luverne, Minnesota, whose weekly columns poignantly tried to explain the unexplainable to his neighbors. Other voices include Josh Lucas, Bobby Cannavale, Samuel L. Jackson, Eli Wallach, Robert Wahlberg, Carolyn McCormack, Adam Arkin and Kevin Conway.

In the meantime, the station's programming continues to be carried (full power) over-the-air on digital channel 27-1. WQEC regrets the inconvenience this situation presents to its over-the-air viewers.

Program service delivery remains unaffected for WQEC on Insight Cable channel 8 in Quincy and to those viewers receiving local programming through Dish Network subscriptions.
